Notes for Escape from Chronopolis:
It is based on ideas from the short story Chronopolis by British author J. G. Ballard.
Chronopolis, the Time City , was once a bustling megalopolis ruled by clocks. Every single human activity was timed down to the millisecond and coordinated by one Master Clock. Eventually there was a revolt and clocks were outlawed. The story concerns one man's obsessive quest to restart the clocks and restore the overly organized world to its original oppressive complexity.
The music loosely refers to the time when people revolted against the clock and fled Chronopolis. Most things are rigidly timed in the work except for the rubato section in the middle. The flute solo might suggest "a flower in the desert" - possibly referring to the idea that there is value in untimed life and escape from the many rigidities and strictures of modern living.
The clockwork motives return at the end, however.
